Why are we called 'Blue Holidays'?
In 2000, when Virgin first asked Australians to put forward ideas in a radio station competition to name the new Virgin airline soon to operate within Australia, they were overwhelmed with over 3,200 responses. The name 'Virgin Blue' was chosen after rigorous consideration - an outstanding choice because it personifies the airline perfectly.
Richard Branson was wholehearted in his support: "I've heard how Australians refer to a redhead as a 'Bluey' and since our planes are red, we thought it would be a bit of fun.
Additionally, we think the name may be appropriate since some people suspect we are going to have a bit of a 'blue' with the big airlines."
Furthermore, the name "...represents our goal to prove to Australia how true blue we are about delivering low fares."
Blue Holidays, a holiday program by Virgin Blue, was launched in June 2003, and after its initial success the program is ready to dramatically lift its product range and positioning.
In April 2006, award-winning low cost carrier Virgin Blue and the Asia Pacific's leading online travel company ZUJI formed a powerful new venture to expand the airline's 'Blue Holidays' program.
Flight options in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific are provided by Virgin Blue and its sister carriers, Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue, whilst flight options to selected international destinations are provided by other participating carriers. In addition, Blue Holidays now offers a substantially increased range of hotels and activities. All of this is available on a new website with technological capabilities presently unmatched in the Australian marketplace.
